WARSAW TO GET FASTER RAIL CONNECTIONS WITH BERLIN, VILNIUS, VIENNA

Travel time spent on trains connecting Warsaw with three nearby capitals, Berlin, Vilnius and Vienna, will be reduced to four hours under a broader European Commission (EC) plan. The EC said on 5/11 that the EU should build a faster and more comprehensive pan-European high-speed railway network by 2040. Warsaw will also benefit from the plan which assumes that trains between the EU's main cities will run at speeds exceeding 200 km/h.The infrastructure improvement will also spur growth in the EU's regions, according to the EC.When the investment is complete, Berlin, Vilnius and Vienna will be within a four-hour train journey from Warsaw. It will only take six hours to get to Latvia's capital Riga and less than eight to Estonia's Tallinn.Under the scheme, the EC is planning to remove cross-border barriers and create joint investment schedules, prepare a financing strategy involving both public and private funds, improve operating conditions for carriers and bolster infrastructure management coordination.
