INDONESIA SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN DOMESTIC STEEL INDUSTRY

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry is intensifying efforts to safeguard the domestic steel market and attract investment, as over 55% of national steel demand is still met through imports, mainly from China. Deputy Minister Faisol Riza highlighted the need to strengthen downstream product standards, increase upstream investment, and promote eco-friendly steel production. Despite Indonesia’s rise to 14th globally in steel output—reaching 18 million tons in 2024—domestic utilization remains low at around 50%, leaving many producers underused. The country’s industrial base includes over 2,100 companies in basic and fabricated metal sectors, yet the gap between production and consumption persists due to limited absorption and reliance on imports. To address these challenges, the Ministry has rolled out several policy measures, including mandatory implementation of 29 Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for metal products, import restrictions (lartas), and smart regulations to support integrated supply chains and attract investment. Anti-dumping duties have also been imposed on steel imports from several countries to protect local producers. Faisol emphasized the need for Indonesia’s steel industry to diversify beyond construction and infrastructure, targeting high-value sectors like automotive, shipbuilding, and heavy equipment that require specialized steel types. This strategic shift aims to enhance competitiveness, reduce import dependency, and position Indonesia as a global player in advanced steel manufacturing.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/1963161/indonesia-seeks-to-strengthen-domestic-steel-industry  (ICE GIACARTA)
