H55 OPENS FIRST NORTH AMERICAN ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT BATTERY FACILITY

Electric aviation took a major step forward in Canada this week as H55, a global leader in certified electric propulsion systems, officially opened its first North American manufacturing and engineering facility in Longueuil, Québec. The new plant, located within the province’s aerospace innovation zone, is set to produce advanced battery packs for electric aircraft, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027.For Canada’s engineering and manufacturing community, H55’s expansion represents more than just a new production site – it marks a crucial investment in the technologies shaping the future of sustainable flight. The facility will serve as both a production hub and engineering office, supporting North American programs with major partners including CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Harbour Air.Engineering Canada’s future in electric aviationFounded by Solar Impulse co-pilot André Borschberg, H55 is widely recognized for its certified electric propulsion and energy management systems. Its new Longueuil facility will focus on battery pack assembly, systems integration and product development, while advancing hybrid and fully electric propulsion technologies tailored for regional and trainer-class aircraft. The site’s initial production will support the Bristell B23 Energic – an all-electric training aircraft now entering the commercial phase following a successful “Across America” demonstration tour. H55 also expects to begin deliveries of its 100kW electric propulsion system in 2026, signaling progress toward commercial certification.“Following the commercial success of our U.S. tour, I am delighted to inaugurate our battery assembly line in Quebec,” said Borschberg. “This reflects our determination to expand our activities in North America and to be closer to our Canadian customers. The electric flight experience convinced every passenger who flew aboard the Bristell B23 Energic, powered by H55’s propulsion system and technology.”Government and industry backing for sustainable manufacturingThe project has received strong government support from all levels, including a $10 million investment from the Québec government. The initiative aligns with Canada’s broader aerospace sustainability goals, which include reduced emissions, strengthened regional manufacturing and the creation of highly skilled technical jobs.
