KAI TARGETS 2026 FOR RAILWAY EXPANSION BEYOND JAVA
Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to expand rail services beyond Java starting in 2026, following instructions from President Prabowo Subianto. The expansion will include 30 new rail extension points and train sets within a year, as well as the development of networks in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The initiative is aimed at strengthening national logistics and connectivity, particularly for key commodities such as palm oil, rubber, coffee, tin, and nickel. KAI is also exploring financing options in China for large-scale projects, including a greenfield railway network in East Kalimantan, which has been designated a National Strategic Project. Additional plans involve upgrading existing lines in Java, expanding networks in Sumatra, and extending Sulawesi’s railway from 83 kilometers to 300 kilometers. Other projects under the regulation include the Makassar–Parepare Railway, the Tebing Tinggi–Kuala Tanjung line supporting the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone, the Rantau Prapat–Kota Pinang Railway, the East Kalimantan Logistics Railway, and the South Sumatra Light Rail Transit (Palembang Metro).Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/391357/kai-targets-2026-for-railway-expansion-beyond-java (ICE GIACARTA)
