Kazakhstan imposes temporary restrictions on grain wagon loading towards UzbekistanKazakhstan has introduced temporary restrictions on the loading of grain wagons towards the Saryagash international crossing (in the south of the country) starting October 25, 2025, the press service of National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy JSC (KTZ) reported."The measure is forced and temporary and is aimed at stabilizing the situation until the actual acceptance of trains is restored to the agreed volumes," stated the national railway carrier in a release distributed on Monday. The company noted that a significant portion of Kazakh exports to Central Asian countries passes through the Saryagash international crossing."Over 50% of Kazakh exports (approximately 700,000 tonnes per month) are directed through this crossing, with about 70% of the volume destined for stations in Uzbekistan. The seasonal concentration of grain transportation creates increased load on the infrastructure of the border section," KTZ said.According to KTZ, an accumulation of over 8,400 wagons has been recorded on the approaches to Saryagash station, which is associated with the untimely acceptance of trains by the Uzbek railway. Against an agreed daily acceptance rate of 35 trains, the actual figures for September and October were 29 and 31 trains, respectively, and current acceptance is maintained at about 29 trains per day."The current situation leads to the formation of temporarily sidelined trains, the occupation of receiving-departure tracks, and an increase in wagon turnover, creating risks of non-compliance with contractual delivery deadlines. The situation also affects the transportation process with Tajikistan and Afghanistan," KTZ reported. In the first ten months of 2025, the volume of transportation between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by 15.8% compared to the same period last year, reaching 25.6 million tonnes. Of these, shipments from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan amounted to 9.8 million tonnes (+6.5%), while shipments in the opposite direction was 1.6 million tonnes (+42%).Kazakhstan Temir Zholy is a transport and logistics company, part of the Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund. It manages the railway, seaport, and airport infrastructure, as well as transport and logistics centers in Kazakhstan. (ICE ALMATY)
