KAZAKHSTAN-RUSSIA-TRANSPORT-COOPERATION

Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics cooperation with Russia a matter of strategic importance – TokayevDeepening cooperation with Russia in the transport and logistics sector is a matter of heightened strategic importance, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.He expressed this view in his article Eternal Friendship Is a Guiding Star for Our Peoples, published Tuesday in Rossiyskaya Gazeta ahead of his state visit to Moscow.Tokayev noted that 13 international transport corridors pass through Kazakhstan – five railway and eight road corridors – carrying about 85% of all land freight traffic between Asia and Europe."Given the size and geographical location of Kazakhstan and Russia, the further development of transit routes and related infrastructure is of immense importance for ensuring stable transport connectivity across the entire Eurasian region. To this end, our countries are working to expand the capacity of the Western Europe–Western China road corridor and to modernize 30 highway checkpoints on the Kazakh-Russian border," Tokayev wrote. He emphasized that Kazakhstan and Russia are also taking steps to expand the capacity of the eastern branch of the North–South transport corridor, where freight traffic volumes are already showing strong growth."The Russia–Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway plays a special role in this process. A roadmap has been signed, the implementation of which will increase the capacity of this strategic artery to 20 million tonnes per year within the next five years," the president said.
