INDONESIA TO SCALE BACK COAL OUTPUT NEXT YEAR ON PRICE SLUMP

Indonesia plans to reduce coal production in 2026 to help stabilize global prices after a sharp downturn caused by oversupply. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed output will be lower than in 2025, with final figures still under calculation. The Benchmark Indonesian Coal Price (HBA) fell to US$103.75 per ton in November, down from US$109.74 in October and US$114.43 a year earlier. Production already declined in 2025 to around 750 million tons, compared to 836 million tons in 2024, and officials expect 2026 output to be capped below 700 million tons. The government will prioritize domestic market obligation (DMO) supplies, potentially raising allocations above 25% for key industries such as electricity, fertilizers, and cement. The regulated coal price for power plants will remain at US$70 per ton, unchanged since 2018, with state utility PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electric utility company, consuming 140–160 million tons annually. Globally, the International Energy Agency projects coal demand to plateau at 8.87 billion tonnes by 2027, with declines in advanced economies offset by growth in emerging markets like India, Indonesia, and Vietnam.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-to-scale-back-coal-output-next-year-on-price-slump  (ICE GIACARTA)
