PANGASIUS EXPORTS FOCUS ON EXPANDING TO CPTPP AND MIDDLE EAST

Vietnam’s pangasius exports are expected to expand further into CPTPP member countries and the Middle East in late 2024 and 2025, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). Shipments to CPTPP markets have shown strong momentum, reaching US$305 million in the first 10 months of the year—up 36% year-on-year and representing 17% of total pangasius exports. Exports to the EU also grew slightly to $149 million. VASEP believes the industry can sustain its recovery and achieve stable growth in 2026 if it effectively leverages tariff advantages and diversifies markets. In October alone, pangasius exports hit $217 million, up 8% year-on-year, bringing the 10-month total to over $1.8 billion, a 9% increase. Frozen pangasius fillets (HS 0304) remained the core product, accounting for nearly $1.5 billion, up 11%. Processed products also grew significantly by 19%. Market performance varied: exports to China and Hong Kong rose 19% to $73 million, reflecting renewed demand, while the US market fell 17% and the UK declined sharply by 33%. Looking ahead, VASEP warns some markets may remain weak in Q4, though the US POR20 ruling—with a zero anti-dumping duty—could boost confidence despite the ongoing 20% reciprocal tariff.
