EDB grants Kazakhstan $5.3 million for sustainable irrigation projectThe Eurasian Development Bank will provide a $5.3 million grant to Kazakhstan for the Business Ecosystem for Sustainable Irrigation project.The financial agreement was signed Wednesday by Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Katarzyna Wawiernia, and Deputy Chairman of the EDB Board Ruslan Dalenov, according to the ministry’s press service.The multi-year project involves creating a National Water Resource Information System, implementing tools for water forecasting and optimal distribution, establishing regional centers for modern irrigation, providing professional development for specialists and introducing water-saving technologies."The initiative is aimed at developing irrigation and improving water-use efficiency in Kazakhstan. Our participation in the project supports strategic goals for modernizing the water sector and building its resilience to climate change," Minister Nurzhigitov said.He also emphasized that while the government is actively working to attract investment to the nation's water sector, all strategic decisions are and will continue to be made exclusively within Kazakhstan. "Transferring control of water resources or infrastructure to foreign states has never been considered," he said.The Eurasian Development Bank is an international financial organization established to promote economic growth and trade-economic ties among member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, some of which later formed the Eurasian Economic Union.
