VIỆT NAM, EU EYE UPGRADE OF TIES TO HIGHEST LEVEL ON 35TH ANNIVERSARY
On the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the European Union has announced its readiness to upgrade relations with Việt Nam to a comprehensive and strategic partnership, reflecting deeper cooperation in trade, investment, climate action, security and innovation. EU Ambassador Julien Guerrier highlighted that the upgraded framework will be “future proof,” expanding collaboration into semiconductors, science and technology, raw materials and other strategic sectors supporting Việt Nam’s long-term development. Five years after the EVFTA took effect, bilateral trade has grown 40% to over €65 billion, making Việt Nam the EU’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. EU foreign direct investment has also risen to €30 billion. A high-level task force has been established to address trade imbalances and ensure full EVFTA implementation. Climate cooperation remains a major pillar, with the EU and partners pledging €15 billion through the Just Energy Transition Partnership to support Việt Nam’s renewable energy shift, including major hydro and offshore wind projects. Europe is also encouraging Việt Nam to use advanced EU technologies across transport, digital infrastructure and green energy. Security collaboration is expanding through peacekeeping cooperation and maritime security initiatives. The EU continues to be Việt Nam’s largest development aid provider, supporting reforms, infrastructure and Việt Nam’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2045. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
