INDONESIA'S SEAWEED SECTOR DRAWS STRONG INVESTOR INTEREST
Investor interest in Indonesia’s seaweed sector was highlighted during a business matching event held on National Fish Day. Acting Director General for Marine and Fishery Product Competitiveness, Machmud, noted that seaweed attracted the strongest attention due to its broad applications across food and non‑food industries, with Dutch investors among those keen to explore projects. Downstream processing is seen as especially promising, driven by rising demand for derivative products such as seaweed‑based straws that can replace plastic. The salt industry also drew attention, supported by the government’s goal of achieving self‑sufficiency by 2027. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has designated seaweed as a priority commodity, with global demand projected to reach 40–43 million tonnes by 2029. According to Director of Seaweed at the Directorate General of Aquaculture Fisheries, Nono Hartanto, ready‑to‑eat food will remain the largest market segment, while demand for seaweed in aquaculture feed and other uses is expected to grow. This outlook underscores seaweed’s potential as a strategic industry for Indonesia, combining sustainability with expanding international market opportunities.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/392833/indonesias-seaweed-sector-draws-strong-investor-interest-official?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=mobile&utm_campaign=latest_category (ICE GIACARTA)
