ADB APPROVES LOAN FOR INDONESIA'S CLEAN ENERGY

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $470 million loan as the first phase of a $1 billion financing package for Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, PLN. The primary goal of the loan is to accelerate the country's clean energy transition by helping PLN to expedite its shift to renewable energy sources. Support critical clean energy projects, particularly on the islands of Sulawesi, Sumatra, and Java. The full $1 billion program, which includes co-financing and grants from other partners, is expected to help Indonesia cut carbon dioxide emissions by 33 million tons by 2030 and support the government's efforts to meet the 23% renewable energy target by 2025.The total financing package mobilizes over $1 billion and includes a $470 million loan administered by the ADB, $100 million from the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund (AIF), and $80 million in grants from the Energy Access and Transition (SEAT) Trust Fund. Indonesia currently sources 15.3% of its electricity from renewables (as of end-2023) and that fulfilling the 23% target by 2025 will require significant effort.
