INDONESIA EYES IDR138 TRILLION BOOST THROUGH PLANTATION DOWNSTREAMING
Indonesia is launching a major downstreaming program for six plantation commodities—coconut, cocoa, sugarcane, coffee, cashew, and pepper/nutmeg—between 2025 and 2027, aiming to unlock IDR 138 trillion (USD 8.29 billion) in economic potential. The initiative is projected to absorb 1.6 million workers and expand cultivation across nearly 871,000 hectares. Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that processing commodities domestically, rather than exporting raw materials, will secure higher value for farmers and strengthen Indonesia’s role in global supply chains. Coconut stands out as the most strategic commodity, with potential to be transformed into high-value products such as refined oil, processed milk, and virgin coconut oil. According to ministry data, coconut cultivation will cover 221,890 hectares, yielding 2.88 million tons worth IDR 5.77 trillion, while cocoa is expected to generate IDR 67.1 trillion from 248,500 hectares. Sugarcane, coffee, cashew, and pepper/nutmeg will contribute IDR 23.2 trillion, IDR 14.93 trillion, IDR 2 trillion, and IDR 25.5 trillion respectively. The downstreaming rollout will be staged, supported by mechanization, infrastructure development, and improved market systems. Beyond boosting export competitiveness, the program is designed to reinforce food security, economic independence, and create opportunities for SMEs, cooperatives, and farmers nationwide.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/1988597/indonesia-eyes-idr-138-trillion-boost-through-plantation-downstreaming (ICE GIACARTA)
