KAZAKHSTAN-PRESIDENT-COPYRIGHT-LAW

Kazakhstan's president approves legislative amendments on intellectual propertyKazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed the law on intellectual property, the press service of the head of state reported on Monday. The law was developed to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights. The amendments provide for a number of measures aimed at enabling people with visual impairments to access published works without the authors' permission and without paying them remuneration through public performance, distribution, and making them available to the public.Along with this, accelerated trademark registration is being introduced. Currently, registration takes seven months, but the law introduces a "paid" option to speed up the process to three months, which will allow trademark owners to bring their goods to market faster. In addition, the law provides for an extension of the period for filing an objection against the registration of a designation as a trademark. Currently, the period for filing objections is one month; the amendments to the legislation increase this period to two months.State control over the use of copyright and related rights objects is being introduced through unscheduled inspections by the justice authorities upon applications from authors and rights holders. One of the important innovations of the law is the provision for a unified digital platform in the field of collective rights management. Its implementation, management, content, support, and system maintenance will be carried out by the National Institute of Intellectual Property. (ICE ALMATY)
