FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SIGNS CONTRACT WITH CANADIAN FIRM TO MAKE DRONES FOR HALIFAX-
Parkland Corp. has completed a test production run of low-carbon jet fuel using non-petroleum oils at its Burnaby refinery, which the company said is the first such production in Canada. The company used existing equipment at the Burnaby refinery to produce 101,000 litres of low-carbon jet fuel using non-food-grade canola oil and animal tallow. Air Canada purchased the experimental fuel, according to Ferio Pugliese, Parkland’s senior vice-president. The volume is equivalent to the fuel capacity of almost four new Boeing 737 aircraft, or just over half the fuel capacity of one extended-range Boeing 777.Pugliese said the production demonstrates the refinery’s capability in low-carbon aviation fuel production. The Burnaby refinery, which is almost 90 years old, has experimented with co-processing for several years, refining biofuels alongside crude oil to create fuels that Parkland said have one-eighth the carbon intensity of fossil fuels alone. In 2022, Parkland announced plans to expand co-processing at the Burnaby refinery and build a stand-alone biodiesel line to produce the equivalent of 6,500 barrels per day of renewable diesel. The company cancelled the project a year later, citing rising costs and market uncertainty. (ICE TORONTO)
