EU APPEALS WTO RULING IN INDONESIA STEEL STANDOFF
The European Union has appealed a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling that faulted its tariff measures on Indonesian stainless steel products, effectively suspending the case since the WTO’s Appellate Body has been non-functional since 2019. The dispute began when Indonesia challenged Brussels’ countervailing and anti-dumping duties, and a WTO panel recently found the EU acted inconsistently with subsidy rules under the SCM Agreement, recommending corrective action. The EU claims the panel made legal errors, but with the appeals system frozen, the ruling cannot advance. Indonesia criticized the EU’s move as “appalling,” arguing it blocks resolution and compensation. The EU countered that it had invited Indonesia to join the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA), an alternative mechanism used by dozens of WTO members, but Indonesia declined. As a result, the EU insists it had no option but to file its appeal into the paralyzed Appellate Body, leaving the dispute in limbo and underscoring the wider crisis in global trade governance.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/11/25/eu-appeals-wto-ruling-in-indonesia-steel-standoff.html (ICE GIACARTA)
