AU LEADERS ADVOCATE FAIRER GLOBAL DEBT REFORMS WITH EU
African Union Chair President João Lourenço urged global partners to adopt more transparent and equitable debt-restructuring mechanisms during the AU-EU Summit in Luanda. He noted that many African countries continue to face rising debt pressures, limiting their capacity to invest in development. Lourenço emphasized the need for a reformed global financial architecture that allows nations to pursue growth without being constrained by heavy repayment burdens. Leaders at the summit called for renewed cooperation to strengthen Africa’s participation in global financial decisions and encouraged faster progress under frameworks such as the G20’s Common Framework. United Nations officials echoed the need for systemic change to support low-income countries. Discussions highlighted that increased transparency and more effective debt solutions will play a central role in supporting long-term economic stability across the continent. (ICE NAIROBI)
