B.C. RELEASES INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF PROVINCIAL CLIMATE PLAN

The Province of British Columbia has released the final report of its independent review of the provincial CleanBC climate plan, titled Rising to the Moment: Renewing CleanBC to improve affordability, strengthen the economy and ensure a cleaner future.Led by independent climate policy experts Merran Smith and Dan Woynillowicz, the review was informed by feedback from communities and stakeholders from across the province, including Indigenous partners, local governments, industry, non-profits, and the Climate Solutions Council.“CleanBC is, for the most part, working […] Yet, despite these successes, the plan is not yet reaching its full potential,” the report reads. “The government now has an opportunity to adjust and close gaps in CleanBC – improving outcomes for all – while acknowledging current challenges.”Despite the momentum of the program, the report shared concerns surrounding the province’s pursuit of increased gas production and new LNZG export opportunities due to the setbacks that they introduce regarding climate pollution.AdvertisementThe report makes seven recommendations for provincial action in order to maintain the progress made by the CleanBC program so far. These include:Accelerate clean electricity production and electrification as the foundation of energy security and economic growth.Make it easier for British Columbians to cut energy bills and climate pollution.Leverage B.C’s clean energy advantage to create more jobs in the energy transition.Support B.C.’s industries to become cleaner and more competitive.Increase production of clean, made-in-B.C biofuels and renewable natural gas.Deepen partnerships with First Nations and local governments.Focus on delivering effective, achievable and fiscally responsible outcomes. The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) applauded the release of the report, specifically the inclusion of the recommendation to accelerate the adoption clean electrical energy and electrification across the province.“The report recognizes that clean electricity is powering B.C.’s economy, bringing jobs and investment to regions across the province, while helping to keep rates affordable and predictable for British Columbians,” said Patricia Lightburn, CanREA’s policy director for British Columbia.
