ONTARIO AND BULGARIA SIGN NUCLEAR SUPPORT AGREEMENT

Ontario and Bulgaria have signed an agreement to support Bulgaria’s planned expansion of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. The agreement follows discussions between the two jurisdictions at the recent World Nuclear Symposium.According to a Dec. 2 press release by the Ontario government, a new consortium comprised of Laurentis Energy Partners, BWXT Canada Ltd. and Canadian Nuclear Partners S.A., has been selected to support a two-phase contract valued at hundreds of millions of dollars to support the build of the two Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactor units, designated as Units 7 and 8.Phase one will reportedly begin immediately to support planning work over the next 15 months. Pending approvals, phase two is expected to begin in 2027 and includes the construction of the units over the next eight to ten years.The project is expected to support hundreds of jobs, combining local and European hiring with expertise from Ontario and across Canada. It will also provide Ontario with the opportunity to expand into the light water nuclear sector for the first time.According to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy, an estimated 30 percent of project personnel expected to come from Bulgaria.Ontario’s government stated that the agreement aligns with its efforts to expand international commercial opportunities for the province’s nuclear sector.The province is already participating in small modular reactor collaboration agreements in Estonia, Poland and Belgium and is involved in the refurbishment of the CANDU Unit 1 reactor at Romania’s Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant.
