APPLE ON TRACK TO SURPASS SAMSUNG AS THE GLOBE’S LEADING SMARTPHONE VENDOR
Apple Inc. is poised to reclaim the top spot in the global smartphone rankings for the first time in over 10 years, driven by strong demand for its latest iPhone lineup and an acceleration in device upgrades, according to Counterpoint Research.Counterpoint reports that the iPhone 17 family, launched in September, has resonated strongly with consumers in the U.S. and in Apple’s strategically vital Chinese market. Robust interest in upgrading has pushed double-digit year-over-year sales growth in both regions. Analysts also note that easing U.S.–China trade tensions and a weaker U.S. dollar have helped fuel additional momentum across several emerging economies. That surge puts Apple on course to overtake Samsung Electronics Co. in annual smartphone shipments this year, based on Counterpoint’s latest projections. iPhone shipments are expected to climb roughly 10% in 2025, outpacing Samsung’s estimated 4.6% growth.Overall, global smartphone shipments are forecast to rise 3.3% this year, with Apple capturing about 19.4% of the market—marking the first time since 2011 that it would secure the No. 1 position.iPhone momentum to continue for AppleCounterpoint expects Apple’s momentum to continue. The anticipated launch of a foldable iPhone and a lower-cost iPhone 17e in 2026, followed by a major product redesign in 2027 as reported by Bloomberg, is projected to strengthen the company’s position. Counterpoint’s long-term forecast sees Apple maintaining the No. 1 global smartphone slot through 2029.Apple recently reported that its sales trajectory is already ahead of internal targets, with the upcoming holiday quarter expected to approach US$140 billion in revenue.
