CANADIAN GRAPHITE PRODUCER SECURES STRATEGIC SUPPLY AGREEMENTS AMID CRITICAL MIN
Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) has announced a series of commercial agreements that would allocate nearly all planned production from its Phase-2 Matawinie Mine to government and industrial partners, as Western nations intensify efforts to establish independent critical mineral supply chains. The agreements include a seven-year offtake arrangement with the Government of Canada for 30,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of graphite concentrate designated for strategic applications in Canada and allied nations. Additional commitments include a revised agreement with Panasonic Energy for 13,000 tpa of active anode material, a commercial arrangement with Traxys for 20,000 tpa for the refractory market, and ongoing negotiations with an anode manufacturer for up to 30,000 tpa potentially supporting General Motors and other customers. The announcements coincide with the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting being held in Canada, where critical mineral security remains a priority agenda item. Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson characterized the government offtake agreement as advancing “economic and national security” objectives, referencing the Critical Minerals Production Alliance initiative.NMG founder Eric Desaulniers stated the agreements provide financial partners with clarity on the project’s bankability as the company works toward a final investment decision. Project financing due diligence is reportedly nearing completion. The agreements reflect broader Western government initiatives to reduce reliance on supply chains concentrated in other geopolitical spheres, particularly for materials essential to electric vehicle batteries, defense systems, and advanced manufacturing. Graphite serves as a key component in lithium-ion battery anodes and various industrial applications. (ICE TORONTO)
