INDONESIA EYES FUTURE QRIS EXPANSION TO EUROPE AS DIGITAL PAYMENTS SURGE
Indonesia is advancing its national digital payment system, QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), with ambitions to expand internationally under the framework of the Indonesia–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). While officials note it is too early to confirm QRIS acceptance in Europe by 2027, the immediate focus is on integration with East Asia—particularly Japan and South Korea—followed by expansion into the Middle East, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. By 2026, Indonesians are expected to use QRIS for transactions in China and South Korea, with India also on the roadmap. This global push comes amid strong domestic growth in Indonesia’s digital economy. Bank Indonesia reported 4.45 billion digital payment transactions in October 2025, a 31.2% increase year-on-year. QRIS has been the fastest-growing channel, surging 139.45% thanks to rising adoption among users and merchants. With mobile and internet banking also showing steady growth, Indonesia is positioning QRIS as a key driver of seamless cross-border payments, aiming to eventually reach the European market once global readiness is achieved.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/5746/markets-and-finance/indonesia-eyes-future-qris-expansion-to-europe-as-digital-payments-surge (ICE GIACARTA)
