CANADIAN FOOD INSPECTION AGENCY TAKES FURTHER ACTION TO LIMIT PISTACHIO-RELATED

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is taking new measures to protect Canadians from the risk of Salmonella infection associated with Iranian pistachios. In September, Canada temporarily banned the import of pistachios and pistachio-containing products from Iran as a precautionary measure. Additionally, CFIA has been conducting targeted testing and inspection of products that were already in the Canadian marketplace, as well as recalling unsafe products.CFIA has now made it mandatory for all federally licenced importers and manufacturers that imported Iranian pistachios before Sept. 27, 2025, to test them for Salmonella before selling them in Canada. This includes products that were made with pistachios from Iran that are not already recalled. These measures are part of the conditions businesses with a Safe Food for Canadians licence must meet. It will remain in place while CFIA analyzes information from the ongoing food safety investigation by the Public Health Agency of Canada. To date, there are 155 laboratory-confirmed Salmonella infections and numerous food recall notifications linked to Iranian pistachios.Food retail businesses including grocery and convenience stores, bakeries, chocolatiers, hotels, restaurants, and businesses that use pistachios as an ingredient, must document or have access to documents that trace each product back to its immediate supplier. These documents must include information on the dates the products were provided to you, as well as the name and address of your supplier. Also, CFIA warns that if you package pistachios or use pistachios as an ingredient to make another food, then do not rely on dry heat, such as roasting, to eliminate Salmonella. The bacteria can survive in high-fat, low-moisture foods such as pistachios. Dry heat is not a reliable control for this hazard. Throughout the outbreak, dry heat treatments have failed to eliminate Salmonella in prepared products.Enforcement for those who fail to meet these conditions include administrative monetary penalties, seizure and detention or recall of products, and suspension or cancellation of licences.
