GREECE: WATER SHORTAGE DECLARED EMERGENCY IN ATTICA, PATMOS, AND LEROS
The Greek government has declared a water shortage emergency in Attica, Patmos, and Leros, with Meganisi in Lefkada expected to follow. Reservoir levels, including the Evinos and Mornos in Attica, have dropped to historic lows due to prolonged drought, shrinking reserves, and changing climate patterns. The emergency declaration allows authorities to fast-track critical water infrastructure projects, including reservoir reinforcement, network upgrades, desalination facilities, and groundwater expansion, without imposing restrictions on citizens. The national water company EYDAP, supported by studies from the National Technical University of Athens, is guiding the measures. These actions aim to stabilize the water supply immediately while ensuring long-term resilience, with strategic planning designed to secure water for the next 25 years. Nationwide reviews of water reserves continue, helping authorities make informed policy and project decisions. Citizens are urged to use water responsibly, even though no immediate restrictions have been imposed. (ICE ATENE)
