GREECE: THESSALONIKI PORT’S PIER 6 EXPANSION TO BOOST CAPACITY AND CONNECTIVITY

The Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA) has officially launched the expansion of Pier 6, marking the largest upgrade project for the strategic northern Greek port. The project will extend Pier 6 by 513 meters in length and 306.5 meters in width, while also deepening the navigation channel and maneuvering area to safely accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) of up to 24,000 TEU. Once completed, the container terminal’s capacity will rise from 650,000 TEU to 1.5 million TEU, significantly enhancing the port’s competitiveness in Southeast Europe. The project is expected to be completed within 40 months with a total budget of €195.6 million (potentially rising to €270 million including machinery and automation costs). The investment will also improve the port’s link to the national road and railroad network, with the railway connection, including an elevated bridge, scheduled for completion by 2030.The financing will be covered through ThPA’s existing capital and bank loans. The upgraded Pier 6 is expected to serve more container vessels simultaneously, enhance Greece’s port ecosystem, and strengthen connectivity for the country’s logistics and shipping sector.
