GREECE: ADMIE PRIORITIZES MAJOR ELECTRICITY INTERCONNECTIONS IN GREECE

ADMIE (Independent Power Transmission Operator) CEO Manos Manousakis highlighted three key projects for the next five years: the Greece-Italy interconnection, the domestic island links to the Dodecanese and the Northern Aegean. The Greece-Italy line will triple current transmission capacity, enabling exports of Greece’s green energy surplus. Island interconnections aim to enhance energy security and reduce costs for residents and consumers. Since 2017, ADMIE has invested €3 billion in network projects, with a ten-year investment plan of €6 billion. Manousakis stressed the importance of these projects for Greece’s energy transition and confirmed state support to secure necessary financing. He also pointed to broader regional initiatives, including the Greece-Cyprus-Israel “Great Sea Interconnector,” cooperation with Egypt’s GREGY project, and a feasibility study for a Greece-Saudi Arabia link, underlining the geopolitical and energy security significance of regional interconnections. Manousakis noted that natural gas will remain essential until large-scale energy storage matures, ensuring system stability amid the transition to cleaner energy. (ICE ATENE)
