GREECE EMERGES AS KEY ENERGY HUB IN EUROPE

Greece is positioning itself as a strategic energy transit hub in Europe, with major developments in hydrocarbon exploration and LNG infrastructure. Last November, ExxonMobil signed an agreement to enter "Block 2" west of Corfu, on the border with the Italian EEZ, marking the first exploratory drilling in Greece in 40 years. ExxonMobil holds 60% of the joint venture, alongside Energean (30%) and Helleniq Energy (10%). If drilling proves successful, production could begin after 2030, with investments estimated at $5 billion for infrastructure. Meanwhile, negotiations with Chevron continue for areas south of the Peloponnese and Crete. At the Transatlantic Cooperation Summit (P-TEC), Greece signed agreements to transport US liquefied natural gas (LNG) through its system to Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, highlighting the country’s role as a key transit hub. The first long-term contract was signed by ATLANTIC-SEE LNG TRADE, a joint venture of AKTOR Group and DEPA Commercial, with US producer Venture Global. Greece’s upgraded energy infrastructure could cover up to 10 billion cubic meters per year, roughly one-third of the projected regional shortfall caused by reduced Russian gas supplies. (ICE ATENE)
