GREECE: GREEK PARLIAMENT APPROVES 35-YEAR CONCESSION FOR EGNATIA ODOS

The Greek Parliament has approved a 35-year concession for Egnatia Odos and three vertical road axes, marking a major milestone in the modernization of one of Greece’s most strategic transport corridors. The concession, signed in March 2024 with GEK Terna-Egis Project, covers the 658 km Egnatia Odos, connecting Igoumenitsa on the western coast to Kipi in Evros on the eastern border, as well as the vertical axes of Siatista-Ieropigi/Krystallopigi, Thessaloniki-Serres-Promachonas, Halastra-Evzoni, and surrounding side roads. Under the terms of the agreement, the concessionaire will contribute nearly €1.3 billion, funding road maintenance and repairs, upgrading toll systems, building 16 car stations and 12 rest areas, and improving tunnels along the route. Infrastructure & Transport Minister Christos Dimas said the project is “one of the most significant concessions of recent years,” noting it fulfills long-standing infrastructure commitments and ensures optimal management of a critical national highway. The tender was conducted by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, now part of Growthfund, Greece’s National Fund. The project is expected to bring modern infrastructure standards, improve connectivity, and enhance safety for both local and international traffic. (ICE ATENE)
