INDONESIA BOLSTERS AQUACULTURE DRIVE AS FISH OUTPUT HITS 5.02M TONS

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the aquaculture sector, reporting that national farmed fish production reached 5.02 million tons in Q3 2025—96.95% of the annual target. Director General of Aquaculture Haeru Rahayu stated that non-tax state revenue from the sub-sector had exceeded its target by 391.55%, reflecting effective support from KKP’s technical units. Indonesia also produced 8.2 million tons of seaweed as of September, nearly meeting the 2025 target of 8.63 million tons. The ministry is promoting a blue economy approach emphasizing ecological balance and focusing on shrimp, seaweed, tilapia, crabs, and lobsters—highlighting shrimp as a particularly strong export commodity worth up to US$2 billion annually. To boost future production, the KKP is advancing three core strategies: developing aquaculture pilot projects, revitalizing ponds, and building community-based aquaculture villages. Examples include expanding a tilapia cultivation zone in Karawang from 315 hectares to 400 hectares by year-end and developing a 2,000-hectare integrated shrimp farming zone in East Sumba valued at IDR 7 trillion (around US$420 million). Expected to produce 75,000 tons of shrimp and create 10,000 jobs, the project underscores the ministry’s goal to enhance the welfare of cultivators while ensuring environmental sustainability.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/396538/indonesia-bolsters-aquaculture-drive-as-fish-output-hits-502m-tons (ICE GIACARTA)
