INDONESIA'S RICE IMPORT BAN LOWERED GLOBAL PRICES: MINISTER
Indonesia’s ban on rice imports has significantly pushed down global rice prices, with Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, noting that world prices fell from about US$650 to below US$400 per ton after the policy took effect. Indonesia, once a major rice importer, has shifted toward boosting domestic production under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. The country moved from importing 4.5 million tons of rice last year to recording a 4.7‑million‑ton surplus in 2025, while state-owned Bulog currently stores 3.7 million tons. National rice production rose to 34.77 million tons, a 13.54% increase from the previous year, alongside strong gains in corn production. With rising output and stronger stockpiles, Indonesia is on track to achieve rice self‑sufficiency in early 2026, signaling a significant shift in its food security strategy and reducing the need for imports moving forward.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/396718/indonesias-rice-import-ban-lowered-global-prices-minister (ICE GIACARTA)
