SOUTH KOREA TOPS AI SLOP CONSUMPTION, CREATION, SPREAD
South Korea has ranked first worldwide in both the consumption and creation of low-quality artificial intelligence–generated content, commonly referred to as “AI slop,” according to a recent analysis cited in The Chosun Ilbo. The term describes easily produced, low-value AI content such as repetitive short videos and superficial posts that dominate online platforms. AI-generated content originating from South Korea has reportedly accumulated 8.45 billion views, underscoring the scale of public engagement. The article notes that South Korea’s advanced digital infrastructure, high smartphone penetration and strong familiarity with new technologies have accelerated the rapid adoption of generative AI tools. While this reflects the country’s technological sophistication, experts warn that the flood of low-quality AI content risks degrading the online information environment, increasing misinformation and blurring the line between reliable and unreliable content. Concerns are also growing that platform algorithms prioritize volume and engagement over accuracy or substance, further amplifying low-value material. As a result, public trust in digital content could be undermined if safeguards are not strengthened. In response to these challenges, the South Korean government is preparing to introduce a mandatory labeling system for AI-generated content, aimed at improving transparency and helping users distinguish AI-produced material from human-created content. The debate highlights the broader challenge facing South Korea as it pushes to become a global AI leader: balancing rapid innovation with responsible governance and maintaining the quality and credibility of digital media in an increasingly AI-driven environment.
