INDONESIA SEEKS TRADE PACT WITH MEXICO TO AVERT PLANNED TARIFFS

Indonesia is seeking to fast-track a bilateral trade agreement with Mexico to secure an exemption from planned Mexican tariffs starting in 2026, which could reach up to 50% on imports from several Asian countries, including Indonesia. Trade Minister Budi Santoso said talks were already underway and could be modelled on the Indonesia–Peru CEPA, potentially including a clause guaranteeing tariff exemptions for Indonesian exports. Mexico’s Senate has approved the tariff package, covering products such as autos and parts, textiles and clothing, plastics and steel, with most duties expected to be up to 35% for countries without trade deals. The move is widely seen as protecting domestic industry and jobs, while also linked to Mexico’s positioning ahead of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) review and its effort to raise revenue to narrow the fiscal deficit.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/12/16/ri-seeks-trade-pact-with-mexico-to-avert-planned-tariffs.html (ICE GIACARTA)
