INDONESIA, WORLD’S TOP COAL AND NICKEL EXPORTER, TO CUT OUTPUT
Indonesia plans to cut production of both nickel and coal in 2026 as part of efforts to address global oversupply and stabilize depressed commodity prices, according to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia. Coal benchmark prices have been falling, with Indonesia’s reference price dropping to $98.26 per ton in early December amid weaker demand from major buyers such as China and India. Coal output is already projected to decline to around 750 million tons in 2025, down from 836 million tons in 2024, and the government signals a further drop to below 700 million tons in 2026. Compliance with reduced production quotas will be tightly enforced, with companies facing potential reviews of their work plans if they exceed approved limits. Indonesia will also significantly reduce nickel production as the global market faces a deepening surplus. According to the national nickel association APNI, output may fall to about 250 million tons in 2026 from roughly 379 million tons in 2025. The oversupply—expected to widen to 261 million tons in 2026—has pressured prices, with Indonesia contributing around 65% of the global excess. Officials describe the production cuts as a corrective measure to rebalance markets distorted by excessive supply, with the aim of restoring healthier price levels for both commodities.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-worlds-top-coal-and-nickel-exporter-to-cut-output (ICE GIACARTA)
