CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIES CONTRIBUTE 2.2% TO JORDAN’S GDP — JCI

A report issued by the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) revealed that the construction industries sector contributes 2.2 per cent to the Kingdom’s gross domestic product, underscoring its role as a key pillar of the national economy.According to the report, cited by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the sector has an annual production capacity exceeding JD1.7 billion, accounting for 11 per cent of total output in the manufacturing industries. Value added represents 44 per cent of total production.The sector also dominates the local market, supplying 82 per cent of total domestic consumption, particularly in cement, steel and related products, building stones, marble, and gypsum.The report highlighted the sector’s strong contribution to industrial activity, noting that it is among the largest value-added economic sectors due to its reliance on local inputs and labour. It also plays a significant role in supporting urban development in Jordan and neighbouring countries.Companies operating in the sector supply housing, construction, and infrastructure projects with essential materials such as cement, steel, insulation materials, and pipes, positioning the sector as a central driver in meeting the demands of urban expansion, the report said.Exports from the construction industries sector reached JD136 million during the first nine months of the current year, compared with JD 72 million during the same period in 2024, the report said.Jordanian construction products were exported to 32 countries, with Syria accounting for 45 percent of total exports during the period, followed by Palestine at 25 per cent, Saudi Arabia at 23 per cent, and Iraq at 3 percent.The report also identified untapped export opportunities valued at nearly $60 million, particularly in large building stones, construction stones, sumac stone, and basalt.The sector comprises 2,203 establishments with a total registered capital of JD269 million, employing around 15,000 workers, the majority of whom are Jordanian nationals.Sub-sectors within the construction industries include building stones, marble, granite and basalt slab production, decorative works, construction services, ready-mix concrete, rock wool products, asphalt products, metal structures, reinforcing steel bars, and related industries.
