INDONESIA HALTS RICE, SUGAR, CORN IMPORTS IN 2026

The Indonesian government has announced a full ban on rice, table sugar, and corn imports for 2026, citing strong domestic production and a shift toward national food self‑sufficiency. Officials say the country now meets household needs for these key commodities, and even industrial rice imports—usually used in manufacturing—have been halted to push industries to rely on local farmers instead.Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the move follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to prioritize farmer welfare and strengthen local supply chains. Production forecasts support the ban: 2026 sugar output is expected to reach 3 million tonnes against a 2.836‑million‑tonne demand, and corn production is projected at 18 million tonnes, exceeding national needs. The 2026 National Food Balance will guide the implementation of the policy and Indonesia’s transition toward full agricultural independence.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/398149/indonesia-halts-rice-sugar-corn-imports-in-2026  (ICE GIACARTA)
