UTILITIES SECTOR TO BENEFIT FROM DATA CENTRE EXPANSION IN MALAYSIA — KENANGA IB

Kuala Lumpur, 9 January 2026 – Malaysia’s utilities sector is poised to benefit strongly from the rapid expansion of data centres, driven by resilient electricity demand and stable long-term income streams, according to Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd. The bank reaffirmed its 2026 electricity demand growth forecast of 3.5%, supported by rising commercial load and surging data centre capacity, with utilisation jumping to 710MW in September 2025 from 503MW in June and 29 completed projects totalling 3,800MW. Eight new electricity supply agreements signed year to date lifted total ESA capacity to 7,100MW, while the tight timeline to add 6GW–8GW of new capacity by 2030 is expected to spur new power generation approvals by end-2025 or early-2026 and construction from end-2026. With no new coal plants planned, gas-fired generation will play a key role, supporting positive prospects for gas players. Kenanga IB maintained its “overweight” call on the sector, naming Tenaga Nasional Bhd as its top pick, while highlighting opportunities for independent power producers and gas utilities amid the data centre-driven demand upcycle.Source - https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/788617 (ICE KUALA LUMPUR)
