EU AMBASSADOR: EUROPEAN INVESTMENT DIRECTLY BENEFITS JORDANIANS
The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, confirmed the long-standing strong relations between Jordan and the EU, based on shared values and objectives at both regional and international levels. Speaking on the "Zero Distance" program, he emphasized that Jordan is a strategic partner in a difficult region. He described the recent EU-Jordan summit as a unique platform for dialogue, where EU leaders delivered and received messages, agreeing on common positions on issues such as Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, and setting objectives for bilateral relations until the next summit in 2028. Regarding the €3 billion support package, the Ambassador noted that implementation is on track, with half dedicated to investments, both public and private. He stressed that Jordan must continue reforms, provide a level playing field for investors, and showcase profitable opportunities. The upcoming EU-Jordan Investment Conference at the Dead Sea in April will highlight sectors including energy, digital connectivity, water, and regional reconstruction, aiming to attract European investors. Chatzisavas explained that investments are profitable due to Jordan’s solid institutions, transparency, and limited corruption. The EU will provide guarantees to encourage private sector participation, particularly in megaprojects like the Aqaba–Amman water conveyor and green hydrogen production. The Ambassador highlighted ongoing EU support for digital infrastructure, including the Aqaba Digital Hub and subsea cables connecting Europe and India. Vocational training and the industrial base are also key priorities, with EU support aimed at strengthening Jordan’s real economy, enhancing exports, and creating jobs. The water sector remains critical, with the EU funding the construction of the water conveyor, six wastewater treatment plants, and the operationalization of the Disi source, including solar infrastructure. Security and defense cooperation are now the fastest-growing pillar of the EU-Jordan partnership. The EU will provide €35 million for a top-tier air defense system and continues to support the Jordan Armed Forces, Public Security Directorate, and border security. EU observers monitored Jordan’s legislative elections in 2024, reflecting confidence in the electoral process and ongoing dialogue on human rights, freedom of expression, and civic space. Chatzisavas concluded that the EU is a committed, reliable partner for Jordan, emphasizing that the €3 billion package will be delivered without political conditions, supporting Jordan’s stability, economic modernization, and regional integration.
