INDONESIA CLAIMS POLE POSITION IN GLOBAL TRADE EXPANSION FOR 2026
Indonesia has positioned itself as one of the world’s most dynamic economies, achieving significant market liberalization throughout 2025 and securing what officials call a strategic “pole position” for 2026. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto cited a Swiss study ranking Indonesia among the top countries for opening market access, driven by major trade agreements and global partnerships. Key initiatives include progress on the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (EU CEPA), deals with Peru and Canada, and preparations for a bilateral CEPA with the United Kingdom. Indonesia has also signed agreements with the Eurasian Economic Union (IAEU) and strengthened its role in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), linking ASEAN with major economies such as China, Japan, and Australia. Looking ahead, Indonesia is undergoing a technical review for OECD membership and pursuing accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Minister Airlangga emphasized Indonesia’s competitive advantages, including strong economic fundamentals and lower energy costs compared to regional rivals like Vietnam. Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are proving instrumental in penetrating global markets, while the government urges the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin) to intensify trade promotion efforts. Despite regional competition, Indonesia is emerging as a top alternative growth destination after China, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading hub for international trade and investment.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2104349/indonesia-claims-pole-position-in-global-trade-expansion-for-2026 (ICE GIACARTA)
