INDONESIA CALLS GLOBAL INVESTORS TO DEVELOP GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Indonesia is preparing to revise its Geothermal Law as part of a broader regulatory overhaul to address declining investment and accelerate clean‑energy development. During the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week on January 14, 2025, People’s Consultative Assembly of Indonesia (MPR) Deputy Speaker Eddy Soeparno urged global energy players to invest in Indonesia’s geothermal sector, emphasizing that the country possesses 24 GW of geothermal potential, of which only 10% has been utilized. Although Indonesia has abundant renewable resources—solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal—its energy system remains heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels, including one million barrels of oil per day, seven million tons of LPG annually, and substantial diesel volumes. This dependence underscores the country’s ongoing challenges in achieving long‑term energy security. Under the national electricity development plan, the government aims to build 69.5 GW of new power capacity over the next eight to nine years, including 5.2 GW from geothermal, 42 GW from other renewable sources, and 10 GW from battery storage, requiring an estimated USD 190 billion in investment. To attract global investors, Indonesia is fast‑tracking key regulatory reforms, including the Renewable Energy Bill, revisions to the Electricity Law, and the Climate Change Management Bill. A central issue under review is power wheeling, which would allow independent producers to transmit electricity through the national grid, thereby improving market access. Eddy affirmed that the government and Parliament are committed to creating a more conducive environment to support and accelerate geothermal and broader clean‑energy investment.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2106804/indonesia-calls-global-investors-to-develop-geothermal-energy (ICE GIACARTA)
