SAMA KARBALA POULTRY PROJECT: "STRATEGIC FOOD SECURITY ASSET"
Sama Karbala poultry project represents a key pillar in strengthening Iraq's national food security and reducing reliance on imports, according to the head of the National Investment Commission (NIC).During a field visit to Karbala on Sunday, NIC Chairman Professor Haider Mohammed Makkiyah toured the poultry complex, one of the country's largest strategic investments in the livestock sector.Makkiyah said the project aligns with state policy to support domestic production, achieve self-sufficiency, and provide high-quality food products to Iraqi consumers. He also highlighted its role in creating jobs for local residents, stimulating economic activity in Karbala, and stabilising the market through year-round supply of poultry products. The project aims to produce chicken meat and eggs in line with internationally recognised health and technical standards, reinforcing consumer confidence in locally produced goods. It relies on modern poultry halls equipped with advanced ventilation and cooling systems, alongside an integrated veterinary and health services framework to ensure quality and safety across all production stages.According to the NIC, Sama Karbala has one of the highest production capacities among poultry projects in Iraq, with annual output of around 325,000 tonnes of poultry meat and more than 280 million chickens. It also operates advanced automated slaughterhouses with a combined capacity of approximately 748,000 birds per day.Egg production capacity is estimated at up to 3 billion eggs annually, within an integrated production system designed to meet domestic demand and support national self-sufficiency.
