CBS GOVERNOR DECLARES NEW SYRIAN POUND AS SOLE SYMBOL OF NATIONAL MONETARY SOVEREIGNTY

The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdelkader Husrieh emphasized on Monday that the new Syrian pound is the sole symbol of the country’s monetary sovereignty.  He added that the Central Bank is working closely with relevant authorities to regulate the national currency environment in order to ensure market stability and safeguard the interests of citizens across all Syrian provinces.  In an interview with SANA, the Governor explained that the laws and executive decisions guiding the circulation of foreign currencies, including the Turkish lira, are distinct from the process of currency exchange, which is limited to replacing the old currency with the new one.  Husrieh further noted that the currency replacement process is designed to be smooth and without imposing any additional burdens on the public. He stressed that the exchange is not tied to foreign currencies or the U.S. dollar and does not aim to regulate or restrict them. The process also will not affect market movement or foreign currency reserves.  “The currency replacement does not target the Turkish lira at this stage,” Husrieh added. “The withdrawal of the Turkish lira has already begun separately, and it is progressing as planned. Any future regulatory measures will be announced transparently.”  Husrieh also urged the media to rely on official sources for information, warning against the spread of rumors. He reiterated his commitment to open communication and transparency.  On Sunday, the Minister of Economy and Trade, Nidal al-Shaar, and Husrieh toured several currency exchange centers in Damascus. The visit aimed to monitor the implementation of the new currency replacement process and ensure compliance with the established regulations. (ICE BEIRUT)
