Turkiye’s TPAO evaluates Bolshoy Zhambyl offshore project in northern CaspianTurkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO, Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı) will conduct a detailed feasibility study of the Bolshoy Zhambyl offshore block in the northern Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan’s national oil company KazMunayGas (KMG) said.KMG CEO Askhat Khasenov and TPAO CEO Cem Erdem discussed expanding cooperation in geological exploration, hydrocarbon production and investment during talks in Ankara.“Following preliminary analysis, our Turkish partners have selected the Bolshoy Zhambyl offshore project in the northern Caspian. TPAO is currently conducting its own detailed feasibility study of the field,” KMG said in a statement on Friday.Khasenov said KMG is ready to move to the practical implementation stage of the project.Since signing a confidentiality agreement in June 2025, KMG and TPAO have been exchanging technical information and reviewing exploration opportunities in Kazakhstan and Turkey. TPAO specialists have also been granted access to geological data on prospective blocks in Kazakhstan, the company said.According to open sources, the Zhambyl field is located about 60 km offshore in the northern Caspian and covers approximately 1,188 square kilometers. It was discovered in 2013.Kazakh media reported in 2021 that BP, which had been appraising the Bolshoy Zhambyl, Zhemchuzhnaya and Kalamkas-Sea blocks, had finalized talks with KazMunayGas on exiting the projects, citing a strategic shift toward renewable energy. The developments were expected to attract about $4.4 billion in investment.TPAO was founded in 1954 as an integrated state-owned oil company engaged in exploration, production, refining, and marketing. TPAO is one of Turkiye's key state-owned companies with a large-scale program to increase hydrocarbon production, particularly in the Black Sea and eastern regions. In addition to domestic projects, the company is involved in oil and gas exploration and production in Azerbaijan, Algeria, and offshore Northern Cyprus. TPAO also operates its own fleet of seismic and drilling vessels.National Company KazMunayGas JSC is the national operator for exploration, production, processing and transportation of hydrocarbons.
