KMG, CITIC Construction advance early stages of Karachaganak Gas Processing Plant constructionAskat Khassenov,  CEO of National Company KazMunayGas JSC (KMG), and Yang Jianjiang, CEO of CITIC Construction, discussed launching the project to build a gas processing plant (GPP) at the Karachaganak field, according to a KMG press release."An agreement was reached on the next steps to transition to the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase and to seek optimal technical and organizational solutions. Currently, specialists from KMG and CITIC Construction are actively working on the early stages of the GPP construction," stated the press release following the meeting.Khassenov emphasized the importance of adhering to the established timelines in preparing the key conditions for the project's implementation.The meeting also addressed the potential involvement of CITIC Construction in other gas projects in Kazakhstan."KazMunayGas places special importance on strengthening mutually beneficial ties with Chinese companies. Given that the CITIC Group is a long-standing strategic partner of KMG with extensive experience in implementing major projects, we intend to develop long-term cooperation across all key areas," Khassenov is quoted as saying in the statement.In late 2025, KMG and CITIC Construction signed an agreement on the basic principles of cooperation for the construction of the Karachaganak GPP, which outlines cost assessment, equipment layout, and the form of collaboration.As previously reported, in March 2025, the field operator, Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V., announced the start of engineering and technical work for the GPP construction project. The planned capacity of the facility is 4 billion cubic meters per year.Currently, up to 9 billion cubic meters of raw gas from Karachaganak is processed annually at the Orenburg GPP in Russia before being returned to Kazakhstan for supply to the domestic market.In October 2025, Kazakhstan's Energy Minister, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, stated that negotiations were underway to build a domestic GPP at Karachaganak, with the future plant to be constructed by KMG.Also, in late 2025, KMG's subsidiary, KMG PetroChem, signed an EPC contract with a consortium led by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd. (CPP) for the construction of main pipelines in the Atyrau region. CITIC Construction Co. will also participate in implementing this project.The Karachaganak field is one of the largest in the world, with oil reserves of 1.2 billion tonnes and gas reserves of 1.35 trillion cubic meters.CITIC Construction Co., Ltd. is an international engineering and construction company and a subsidiary of CITIC Group.
