EU WILL INVEST ADDITIONAL €2 MILLION IN "GREEN" TURKMENISTAN
SPECA Week in Ashgabat concluded on a high financial and technological note. In parallel to discussions on transport corridors, the fate of the region's "green" future was also being decided on the sidelines of the forum. The third meeting of the Steering Committee of the "EU for Green Development of Turkmenistan" project brought important news: Brussels is allocating an additional €2 million to expand environmental programs in the country. This project, part of the EU Global Gateway strategy which Turkmenistan is implementing jointly with Germany (GIZ) and the EU. The committee approved an operational plan, centered on two revolutionary pilot projects for the region:• Clean Water from the Sun: Using solar energy and unique biotechnologies to purify drainage water;• Hunting for Methane: Implementing LDAR (leak detection and repair) technologies. This is a direct response to global climate challenges, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions at the country's energy facilities. As commented by the GIZ Program Manager Dr. Karolina Milow the partnership between the Turkmen Agencies and GIZ has entered an active phase, thus additional funds will strengthen the capacity to integrate global standards into Turkmenistan's climate strategy.
