INDONESIA TARGETS MID‑2026 GROUNDBREAKING FOR 34 WASTE‑TO‑ENERGY PLANTS (PLTSA)

Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is pushing to begin groundbreaking for several Waste‑to‑Energy (PLTSa) projects by mid‑2026, part of a broader plan to develop facilities in 34 districts and cities with capacities of up to 1,000 tons of waste per day. With the tender process now open, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, expressed optimism that construction on some plants can start this year, aiming for operations to begin as early as 2027. He emphasized that land readiness is the biggest factor influencing project speed, as PLTSa construction typically takes 1.5–2 years once land is secured. BPI Danantara, which oversees investment for the program, is also targeting a March 2026 groundbreaking, noting that tender timelines have accelerated significantly compared to the previous 3–4‑year negotiation cycles. Although the waste‑to‑energy initiative has existed since 2014, only Surabaya and Surakarta currently have commercially operating PLTSa facilities. With rising interest from domestic and foreign investors, the government sees strong momentum to finally scale up waste‑to‑energy development nationwide.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/esdm-targetkan-groundbreaking-34-pltsa-pertengahan-2026-olah-1000-ton-sampahhari (ICE GIACARTA)
