INDONESIA TARGETS 7 GW NUCLEAR POWER CAPACITY BY 2034

Indonesia is embarking on a significant energy transition by integrating nuclear power into its national grid, aiming for a total capacity of 7 GW by 2034. Presidential Special Envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo confirmed at the 2026 Indonesia Economic Summit that the roadmap begins with an initial 500 MW phase, with construction slated to start as early as 2027 in Sumatra and Kalimantan. This move characterizes nuclear power as a vital "green and carbon-neutral" pillar to support Indonesia's rising electricity demand while diversifying away from fossil fuels. This nuclear ambition is part of a broader 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), which targets an additional 69.5 GW of total capacity. Under this plan, 76% of new energy will come from renewables and storage, including massive investments in solar (17.1 GW) and hydropower (11.7 GW). By balancing 42.6 GW of renewable sources with strategic nuclear and storage additions, the government aims to secure energy stability while positioning Indonesia as a hub for new international investment in advanced energy technologies.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6042/energy-and-resources/indonesia-targets-7-gw-nuclear-power-capacity-by-2034-to-support-energy-transition (ICE GIACARTA)
