Kazakhstan, Russia's Gazprom set 2030 launch date for Ishim-Astana gas pipelineKazakhstan and Russian energy giant Gazprom plan to launch a major new gas pipeline on Jan. 1, 2030, a Kazakh official announced Wednesday. The joint Ishim-Astana pipeline project is designed to supply gas to northern Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Russia, Dauren Abayev, said the signing of the implementation memorandum was "significant for the gas supply of the northern regions of our country.""Transit supplies of Russian gas through Kazakhstan are steadily growing," Abayev wrote in an article for Komsomolskaya Pravda. He added that the pipeline's launch would strengthen "regional stability and the energy security of Central Asia" and "will also contribute to the expansion and modernization of Kazakhstan's gas transportation infrastructure."The project stems from a strategic cooperation agreement signed in 2023 and a follow-up memorandum in October 2025.The pipeline is part of broader talks on infrastructure with a total capacity of up to 45 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Plans indicate roughly 10 billion cubic meters would be used for domestic supply in northeastern Kazakhstan, with the remaining 35 billion cubic meters intended for export to China. The project is seen as instrumental in redirecting Russia's pipeline gas exports. The route, with a planned annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters and compressor station power of 50 MW, is already included in Russia's federal transport planning scheme. (ICE ALMATY)
