KMG, CNPC agree to expand cooperation in key partnership areasNC KazMunayGas JSC (KMG) and China's CNPC have agreed to intensify cooperation in a number of key areas, including geological exploration, production, and processing of hydrocarbons, according to the KMG press service.According to the press service, on Thursday, KMG CEO Askhat Khassenov held a meeting with the newly appointed General Director of CNPC Central Asia and CNPC Kazakhstan, Li Shufeng. During the meeting, the parties "compared notes" on current and prospective projects."During the meeting, the parties considered opportunities to expand cooperation in geological exploration to investigate new territories, replenish the resource base, and introduce innovative technologies. In particular, the discussion touched upon the Kyzylorda region, where oil production continues to decline due to depletion of reserves at mature fields," the statement said.KMG recalled that in 2025, the company independently drilled a deep exploration well at the Turgay Paleozoic site in the Kyzylorda region, reaching a depth of 5,500 meters. The results confirmed the prospects for further exploration work.The parties also reviewed the progress of joint strategic projects. As part of the Urikhtau project, gas supplies to the Zhanazhol gas processing plant in the Aktobe region are planned. The plant is operated by CNPC-Aktobemunaigas JSC. Khassenov emphasized the importance of adhering to the previously approved project implementation timelines.Furthermore, the activities of the joint venture Mangistaumunaigas JSC were discussed. The JV produced 6.1 million tonnes of oil in 2025. "This year, the company continues to implement measures to improve operational efficiency," KMG said.A separate topic was the expansion of the Shymkent Oil Refinery's (PetroKazakhstan Oil Products) production capacity from 6 million to 12 million tonnes per year. Currently, according to the KMG press service, the parties are working on the feasibility study for this project, which is key to ensuring the supply of petroleum products to the domestic market.
