INDONESIA PREPARES SUGAR LABELING POLICY, FOOD SAFETY TASK FORCE

The Indonesian government is preparing a new sugar‑content labeling policy for food and beverages as part of early steps to implement Government Regulation No. 1 of 2026 on Food Safety. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said the move responds to rising non‑communicable diseases, including diabetes among young people. A cross‑ministerial team will be formed to design the labeling scheme, aimed at boosting public awareness of sugar, salt, and fat consumption. The government is also reviewing governance of processed foods, including halal and non‑halal standards, to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The meeting also agreed to establish a national and regional food safety task force involving key agencies such as the National Police, Ministry of Health, and Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM). The task force will enable quicker responses to contamination, residues, and food emergencies. BPOM head Taruna Ikrar said derivative regulations are being harmonized with international standards from Codex, WHO, and FAO, adjusted to Indonesian conditions. The government aims for the new labeling policy and task force to strengthen consumer protection, improve public awareness, and clarify food safety management mechanisms.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/403666/indonesia-prepares-sugar-labeling-policy-food-safety-task-force (ICE GIACARTA)
