BANGLADESH TARGETS SUSTAINABLE, MARKET-ORIENTED AGRICULTURE BY 2050
The government has drafted a comprehensive long-term plan aiming to transition the country's farming sector into a sustainable, innovation-driven, and highly productive industry by 2050. The plan titled "Transforming Bangladesh Agriculture: Outlook 2050" was presented at a national workshop in Dhaka on January 28, organized by the agriculture ministry and the FAO. Background studies were conducted in 13 thematic areas such as nutrition security, climate resilience, and agricultural technology. FEASIBILITY studies assessed data and projected demand-supply up to 2050. Regional consultations involved farmers and stakeholders to identify priorities and challenges. The plan consists of seven chapters covering the agriculture sector's current state, future challenges, supporting policies, and implementation strategies, along with a monitoring mechanism. Abu Noman Faruq Ahmmed highlighted targets to certify 300,000 hectares under Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) by 2028 and integrate pest management on 70% of farmland by 2050, emphasizing food safety and soil health through improved practices. Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stressed the plan's significance for living standards and economic progress. The Outlook 2050 was created through extensive consultations, including various stakeholders, and feedback from the workshop will inform the final document. (ICE NEW DELHI)
